Hey Work Campers,
Want a great place to spend your summer? Here it is, Mesa RV Resort.
I know, I worked there last summer (2008). Aside from all the great
places to visit in and around Gunnison, the park is very pretty and the
owner/management people are easy to get along with.
The park is owned by a fellow and his wife who are originally from
South Africa. (They pronounce it "Sow Africa"...cool accent.) Their
names are Allan and Francie Ivy. You can see their picture in the
newsletter and elsewhere on the site. Besides being a fantastic
professional photographer, Allan is a hands-on owner. I've seen him do
everything from shoveling gravel to fixing the park tractor. This is a
sweat-of-the-brow fellow who will work shoulder to shoulder with you.
The park managers are Bob and Charlotte Carpenter. Like Allan, Bob
is also a hands-on fellow. There's no managing from an "Ivory Tower"
for this guy. Ol' Bob is at it from sun up to sun down, with his coat
tails flapping in the breeze.
Now, here's the best part about work camping at Mesa Resort: This
place is what I call an "Art Park". If it has anything to do with arts
and crafts Allan and Francie want it here. As I said, Allan is a pro
photographer so, if you're a shutter bug or want to be, all there is to
do and learn in the world of cameras will be right at your fingertips.
Bob, the manager, plays keyboard and his wife Charlotte accompanies him
in the vocals department. Charlotte has a base guitar but I think she's
too shy to play it in public right now. I do a little guitar pickin'
myself, so if you're into music (or want to learn) you'll love this
place. There'll be sing-longs and jam sessions galore in 2009!
A lot of the park customers (not just work campers) are into sewing,
quilting, embroidery, beading, wood carving, oil/ acrylic/ watercolor
painting and many other things. Of course, what's available depends on
who shows up for the summer and who doesn't. The point is, if you like
to do any of these things, you'll be welcomed with open arms. If you do
something I haven't mentioned, you can bet others will be interested in
your talent. Well, even if you don't do any of this and just like to be
around such doings, you'll still be welcomed with open arms.
If you like free rent, electric, wi-fi, propane and waking up to
clean, fresh mountain air, while working just three days and playing
the rest of the week, you'll want to call the Mesa Resort number and
sign up for a 2009. Oh, and by the way, if you've never work camped
before but would like to try it, this is a perfect place to learn the
ropes.
Oh, I forgot to make comment about the flowers around here. As you might notice in my picture section, I'm sort of a flower and foliage nut. My wife, Louise, says I'm just an ordinary, everyday kind of nutty nut and she's probably right. Anyway, if you've learned that an absolute, essential part of life is to stop and smell the flowers, you've just chalked up another reason for work camping here at Mesa Resort. Come spring, the wildflowers up in the mountains are just gorgeous. I'm talking acres and acres and acres of flowers. Around here, folks like flowers so much they have annual flower festivals. Come fall, the Aspen trees turn the mountainsides into brilliant shades of yellow and gold . Mix that in with the burgundies, browns, oranges and reds of the other deciduous vegetation and you have a virtual kaleidoscope of fall color. I'm telling you folks, you're missing a great opportunity if you don't work camp for at least one season here at The Mesa RV Resort.
You can bet your hiking boots my wife and I will be back next year!
Jim
